Now, let’s talk about water heaters!
Water Heater Repair Warning Signs
Newer water heaters tend to take up less space, use less energy, and are more efficient. Still, nobody wants to replace a household appliance unless necessary.
You can count on our Boise water heater repair specialists to explain what you should know about your system and whether or not your issue is easily fixable.
Here are three clear signs that it could be time for a repair.
- Your heater is making weird noises. As sediment heats and re-heats, it can harden, creating a rattling sound in your heater.
- You have rusty water. This could either be an indication of rusting pipes or rust forming inside your tank. Either way, an inspection is merited.
- There is water around your heater, indicating a possible leak. Our team can fix this in no time.
Most water heaters have a service life of about 8 to 12 years. When your water heater hits the 10-year mark, you may want to consider swapping it out for a newer model.
If there is a problem, always check to see if a blown fuse or tripped breaker is causing the issue. For natural gas heaters, be sure the thermostat is operating correctly.
Tank Versus Tankless Water Heaters
Who needs a tank? That’s the question you may be asking yourself after going with a tankless water heater.
While tank storage tanks are the more popular models here in the Treasure Valley, there are some compelling reasons to consider going tankless.
For one thing, tankless models take up less space. A tankless system never runs out of hot water. Plus, a tankless heater saves up to 50 percent in energy costs over a conventional heater.
Conventional water heaters typically store up to 80 gallons of hot water. A fuel source, such as natural gas, continuously heats the water in the tank. These systems work when you turn on the hot water faucet, which releases hot water from the top of the tank. A fresh supply of water then enters the bottom of the tank.
Tankless models are compact and mount on a wall. A flow sensor detects when you turn on the hot water faucet, which opens the gas valve to heat up the water. When you turn off the tap, the heating unit stops, saving on energy use and lowering your energy bills.
Tank water heaters are easier to install and typically have fewer upfront costs. But you waste energy because you are continuously keeping a supply of hot water available to use.
Once you empty the tank, you have to wait for more hot water. Finally, you can create a small flood in your basement or utility room if your tank leaks out.
Tankless water heaters are a bit costlier upfront but have a longer life span. They also pay themselves off quickly through lower energy bills.
Tankless water heaters have a limited flow rate, which means your heater may not be able to produce hot water fast enough if you are trying to do several things simultaneously that involve hot water.
Whether you go tank or tankless, our professionals at Western can calculate the right size and flow rate to accommodate your family’s needs.
